My yoga journey with Yong Yoga Asia ~ by Yap Xiao Zhen

I was looking for beginner yoga class since the end of 2020. Since I have been working from home before MCO (Movement Control Order in Malaysia due to COVID) starts, my neck, shoulder stiffness is getting worse because of the improper sitting position and lack of movement. I’ve decided to do something to improve my lifestyle.

With the recommendation from my colleague, I started with Yong Yoga virtual class every Saturday morning and it’s really great way to start my weekend. Besides, I also join the mid week virtual yoga class every Wednesday night and really enjoyed it especially after hectic working day.

With the guidance from our yoga instructors, Su Hock and Leah, I can feel the benefits yoga brings to help relax my body and mind.

Sunrise Yoga, waking up at pre-dawn hours to practice yoga, I can hear the birds chirping excitedly as the Sun peeks its cheery face above the horizon…..sounds sexy ya, but it really takes a lot of willpower to peel my sleepy body off the bed! I surprised myself by being able to do that almost every Saturday (ok gotta admit I ponteng sometimes) while the rest of the family are still snoring away.

I just celebrated my first birthday being a Yong Yoga student.  The improvements are evident. Although I already started learning yoga a few years ago, Su Hock’s lessons have brought a new perspective and depth to my practice. Executing each movement and change of pose with fluidity during the Hatha sequence, relaxing my muscles to let them stretch naturally while holding the Yin poses, and most importantly, maintaining a slow and steady breath throughout the 2-hour long session. Above all, knowing that the sequence is purposefully curated to stretch my meridians and nourish my organs, motivates me to persevere through the challenging segments.  His methodology is a synergistic marriage of Yoga with Qi Gong, which is unique in the fraternity. 

Getting physically stronger and more flexible has proven beneficial in my work as a Physical Therapist. I no longer injure myself while helping others to heal from their aches and pains. I share what I’ve learnt in yoga and incorporate some of the exercises into my clients’ Rehab protocol, with permission and guidance from Su Hock. Yes, I do Walk the Talk, and I want to inspire and help others to get healthier and fitter, despite their age and body condition. It is never too late to start.

Attaining True Health is not just about building a lean, mean killing machine. One should also cultivate our mind and spirit. I’m looking forward to the Mindfulness class and other fascinating programs in the pipelines that Su Hock and his team at Yong Yoga will be presenting in the very near future.

Practice is more fun with a friend(s)

As the saying goes “to walk fast, walk alone. to walk further, walk together”.

The same can be said about Yoga practice.

While yoga is an intimate journey about self discovery, having friends and companions whom share our practice and passion for life can make a lot of difference to keep us going during moments of our stagnation or hesitation.

Before and After: My Yong Yoga experience so far… by Soong Shiau Shan

Personally, I prefer online yoga class than physical class. It offers freedom and flexibility, with the added benefit of not needing to commute to and fro yoga studio or worry about what my yoga attire may look like! That’s why I joined Yong Yoga with no hesitation when I knew that the classes are being conducted online.

Yong Yoga connects me with teachers from different places of the world, SH from Singapore, Leah from China and may be some others in the near future, as well as other yogis from all walks of life. Although we seldom chat during the class, everyone’s busy abusing ourselves by twisting, lengthening and stretching as well as torturing our own mat, but ya, i felt so grateful to have teachers and classmates working out together, for a healthier us 🙂

Usually after the class, I will spend some time on self-practising, and of course, enjoying my second round of Savasana. I noticed a huge different in myself after practising yoga. Yoga helps to increase body awareness and build muscle strength. It corrected my hunchback problem that leads to back pain and breathing difficulties. That’s where the incredible motivation and unstoppable momentum comes from.

After practising yoga for a few months, i thought of setting a slightly more challenging pose as goal, and Sirsasana, yoga headstand came into my mind (over ambitious). Lucky to have a patience coach, SH on my journey to headstand. We started with Dolphin pose. After practising this pose for a while, it’s time! Slowly aligning my back parallel to the wall, lifting my hips, straightening my legs and walk towards my head. After a few struggles of lifting my feet off the ground, I finally did it!

If you are looking for a good stretch and as well as a good sweat through yoga practise, try Yong Yoga. With a mix of movement, breathe works and body awareness, you will be able to calm your mind and strengthen your body!

结合了气功的瑜伽,还真是第一招。这款瑜伽仿佛唤醒了我全身的筋骨,练了它感觉肌体多了弹性,少了些僵硬,身体也增强了力量。这不但对我的肢体上有益处,我本身最大的收获在于领悟到了肢体与思维的协调。

非常喜欢导师在课堂上的引导方式,犹如带领着大家迈向 “自我发现” (self-discovery) 之旅。在那九十分钟里,我们关注的是探索自己的极限和毅力– “这一次做得比上一次好“;与世无争。在不断自我鼓励下,每每有少许在姿势上的进步时,得来地满足感可不是三言两语可形容的。过瘾!

这轮廓也无形中延伸到了日常生活里。在应对日复一日的大小事务,都能以从容不迫的心态去面对。就如课堂上所教导的,每一个瑜伽姿势都有它的步骤和程序。唯有集中于当下,一步一步来,(姿势、事务)终究会做得到、完成。

我非常鼓励那些处于生活节奏紧绷的朋友以及忙碌的爸爸妈妈们来尝试一下。希望能够借着机会在日常中找到平衡点,让生活步伐顿时缓慢下来。与此同时又可以增强体魄。哪怕只有仅仅地九十分钟,这一段属于自己的空间,是值得的。

Jovy Ting ~ 第一次参与户外的瑜伽是真的很不错的体验,有大自然。大致上都是蛮好的,毕竟也是第一次,很多东西都还不懂。只是到了一个时间,真的太晒了🤣🤣 希望jurong一个月也可以安排多几次

Yuki ~ 很高兴能够遇到SH和Bernice老师,他们两位都很有耐心也很有经验,从容地和有步骤地慢慢引导我们,带领我们,让我们一班新的瑜伽新手不会紧张,反而觉得练瑜伽其实是一件非常好玩又有趣的事情。 我觉得练瑜伽,最重要是有一个正确的心态,遵循渐进,不急不躁,从容不迫,才可以越练越进步,这也是SH老师教导我们的正确心态。谢谢老师! 每一次结束后都很自然地期待下一次瑜伽课的到来,因为每次瑜伽课都会让我有所学习和领悟,锻炼瑜伽帮助我们平复坏情绪,让我们更加积极向上。

Esther ~ 我第一次瑜伽~发现瑜伽其实真的可以调整姿势。。很多动作我在做的时候觉得很痛,但是当老师来帮我调整姿势。。嗯嗯发现原来这样才舒服而且不辛苦😀😀当天回家不觉得肌肉酸痛还以为自己没有跟上,结果第二天早上才“够力”酸痛咯🤣🤣🤣🤣 这是才意识到自己太久没运动啦 期待下一次的~瑜伽😀

Weina ~ 我喜欢老师的教学方式:每个人的体质都不一样,他会跟我们说如果做不到也可是用比较柔和的方法。像背后两手交叉也可以用拉衣服做替代。这样让我们没压力,轻松学

Yeesin ~ 很喜欢老师的教学方式、不勉强我们做一些难的动作、只是叫我们尽量、加上Bernice老师的指导真的很好。还有加上老师的幽默让大家都很放松很享受上课❤️

Yin Yin ~ 感恩老师的细心教导😁第一次学瑜伽,感觉学这个运动很好,可以缓解压力,上完那堂课,我的颈项比较没有那紧绷😁虽然有一些动作跟不上,但Bernice 很用心的指导我😁很期待下一堂课😁

I was looking for beginner yoga class since the end of 2020. Since I have been working from home before MCO (Movement Control Order in Malaysia due to COVID) starts, my neck, shoulder stiffness is getting worse because of the improper sitting position and lack of movement. Sunrise Yoga, waking up at pre-dawn hours to practice yoga, I can hear the birds chirping excitedly as the Sun peeks its cheery face above the horizon…..sounds sexy ya, but it really takes a lot of willpower to peel my sleepy body off the bed! I surprised myself by being able to do that almost every Saturday (ok gotta admit I ponteng sometimes) while the rest of the family are still snoring away.

Personally, I prefer online yoga class than physical class. It offers freedom and flexibility, with the added benefit of not needing to commute to and fro yoga studio or worry about what my yoga attire may look like!
